Dr. Kalkidan Lakew Belayneh

Senior Advisor, Policy and Advocacy

Dr. Kalkidan Lakew, Women in Global Health Senior Advisor, Policy and Advocacy, is a medical doctor and public health professional based in Ethiopia. She serves as a Senior Advisor, Policy and Advocacy for Women in Global Health, and supports the organization’s work on the Prevention of Sexual Exploitation, Abuse, and Harassment. She received her medical degree from Addis Ababa University and her MSc in Public Health (Health Economics) from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. She has worked as a lecturer at Addis Ababa University and also worked as a Medical Director of Jamma Primary Hospital. She is the former Deputy Director-General for System Strengthening at the Ethiopian Pharmaceutical Supply Agency where she oversaw various supply chain transformation flagship initiatives and system strengthening activities. Dr. Lakew studied public management at the University of Wisconsin-Madison as a 2018 Mandela Washington Fellow. She is the 2019 Obama Leaders: African Leader and was also selected as one of the 2019 100 Most Influential Young Africans by African Youth Awards. She is a 2020/2021 Chevening Scholar. She is part of a cohort of 4 Fellows of the International Program in Public Health Leadership (IPPHL) at the Evans School of Public Policy and Governance at the University of Washington. She is passionate about women’s health and has experience in advocacy around various public health issues, including the prevention of sexual harassment and creating safe spaces in healthcare settings.
